Description:
Alessandro Stradella was a composer active in Italy in the late 17th century. He is remembered in music history as the originator of the "concerto concerto" style and as a playboy who had many affairs. He is also considered one of the greatest cantata composers before Handel and J.S. Bach, with numerous works in the field of non-acting oratorios, cantatas, and "serenatas," a type of secular cantata. Many of them are about the pain of love, and the interplay of technical singing and instrumentation is superb. This album is the second collection of "Cantatas and Serenatas" and includes one for solo soprano voice and two pieces featuring multiple solo singers. The cantata "In this place where the sun more beautiful than any other rests" has a pastoral atmosphere with a wonderful interplay between male and female voices. The two sopranos in the cantata "To Your Beautiful Appearance" is also a very enjoyable piece with a lot of technical melodies. Estevan Velardi, a scholar of Italian Baroque works, has personally revised Stradella's works and prepared a comparative edition. In this performance, the Alessandro Stradella Consort, an ensemble named after the composer, will lead the audience through the charms of the work.
